What is Artificial Intelligence?
According to Oxford languages, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is described to be the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages.
In 2022, the world’s AI market size was estimated at around US$120 billion dollars, and it’s estimated to grow at an alarming rate with a CAGR of 38.1% from 2022 to 2030.
How does this affect me?
Well, AI is currently employed in many ways in our daily lives and most of the time we do not even notice them! Here are 4 ways AI changes our lives:
1. Social Media
The AI technology adopted by social media platforms identifies trending posts and then includes them in the posts that you view. Another interesting usage is by leading social media platform, TikTok which uses AI to assist users in creating augmented reality effects:
AI Greenscreen: generates an abstract image inspired by any prompt you type into the effect.
AI Art: uses images from your camera roll to create works of art.
2. Email Marketing
This is a form of machine learning where the program generates rules and processes, analysing thousands of inboxes to gather information that enhances their marketing efforts. Information gathered include but are not limited to, time recipients open emails, subject lines that gather more attention, optimal frequency of emails.
3. Security and Surveillance
CCTV cameras are evolving to include an AI layer which makes sense of raw videos. The software develops its rules based on human postures, angles or movements which would then send an alert in the event of an absurd observation.
Very often, CCTV cameras are used to assist in investigations after crimes have been completed. However, with AI CCTVs, information can be stored and viewed in real time allowing for quicker enforcement action.
4. Google Search
Google uses “RankBrain” which is a machine learning algorithm to sort the search results that are presented to you. Based on what you search on google, the technology uses this information and is constantly learning and improving.
This is useful as the algorithm seeks to also understand the true intent of your search. One example would be if you search for “Olympic location”, google understands that the true intent of your search is actually to ask where the upcoming Olympics is going to be held at and as such Google presents this suggestion to users.
