People tend to say university is when you will enjoy and explore your interests and yourself! Here are some tips on how you can plan your time in NTU and have fun throughout your 3 to 4 years!
Tip 1: Make friends and join clubs!
In university, it certainly is a good time to build connections and make friends! Having friends who have similar classes as you will help you work and help each other through the busy semester! It’s a culture in NTU where we share and help each other to make our university lives that little easier!
Beyond academics, join student clubs and extracurricular activities where you will find yourself immersing better into your university life. NTU has many different clubs ranging from academic clubs to sports clubs and volunteering clubs. With a strong hall culture, there are many hall ccas to join too! Meet people with similar interests and you may just meet lifelong friends here!
Tip 2: If possible, plan your academic journey to slot in student exchange!
As we shift back to normal after the pandemic, NTU has been actively opening up exchange opportunities for all students! If you are adventurous and looking for a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience, plan your semesters well to go on a student exchange!
NTU offers many kinds of student exchanges. There are semester-long exchanges, summer exchanges, winter exchanges and even language immersion exchanges to everywhere in the world! There are even Overseas Expedition Programmes for students to work overseas for 6 months! These exchanges can be partially subsidized if needed and provide an international perspective for students.
However, do your homework when finding an exchange university, as you would want to clear as many core modules as you can since all modules taken overseas are graded on a pass/fail basis. Plan your modules for each semester well too so that you can clear modules overseas rather than in NTU! It may seem early to think about an exchange, but just keep a lookout and keep in mind to plan for them!
Tip 3: MOOCs are a good way to clear your modules!
If you haven’t heard, it is possible to clear your broadening and deepening electives online! In NTU, we are allowed to clear non-core modules using Massive Open Online Course (MOOC).
You can choose to take online courses instead of NTU courses to clear your modules, and each online course amounts to a different number of academic units you can clear. This is an extremely flexible way for you to clear your university-required modules, as you can simply do them during your summer or winter holidays and submit them once school starts for clearance.
Many of us have benefitted from this and some people have graduated early because they clear their modules through MOOCs. Do note that all MOOCs are graded on a pass/fail basis and are not included in your GPA calculation. Hence if you are looking to pull up your grades using your electives, MOOCs aren’t your best option. And that’s all the tips we think are most important to help you navigate your first semester in NTU!
