In our previous article, we talked about selecting the right kind of drink for the right kind of occasion/mood. However, nights out and drinking are often associated with unwanted calories and a “beer belly”.
High-calorie alcoholic beverages such as beer, wine, and cocktails can quickly add up, leading to weight gain and other health problems.
The amount of calories usually relies on 1) Sugar and 2) Alcohol Content of the drink and that would mean cocktails fall on the heavier side of the calorie scale by virtue of the mixers which definitely contain a lot more sugars and calories added up.
Spirits with low calorie
Vodka, gin, and tequila are all relatively low in calories, with a typical shot containing around 70-100 calories. These spirits can be mixed with low-calorie mixers such as soda water, diet soda, or tonic water to create a refreshing and calorie-conscious cocktail.
Try to refrain from mixers like flavoured syrups, fruit juice and bitters because they contain a lot more calories. A simple Gin and Tonic can go up to between 120-170 calories. You can also experiment with creating your own low-calorie cocktails using fresh fruits, herbs, and low-calorie mixers.
Dry Wines over Sweet Wines
Dry wines typically contain lesser sugar than sweet/dessert wines so choose wines like Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay for lower calorie count and a less guilty night out. Avoid carbonation, so reconsider when thinking about sparkling wine and champagne.
Light Beers and Wines
Another low-calorie option is to choose light beer or low-alcohol wines. Light beer typically contains fewer calories than regular beer, with some brands containing as little as 55 calories per bottle.
Low-alcohol wines are also available, with some containing only 60-80 calories per serving. Be sure to read the labels carefully and choose brands that are low in calories and sugar.
Drink Responsibly
When it comes to drinking responsibly, it is important to pace yourself and stay hydrated. Alternate alcoholic drinks with water or low-calorie beverages to stay hydrated and avoid drinking too much too quickly.
It is also a good idea to eat a healthy meal before drinking to help slow down the absorption of alcohol into your bloodstream.
In conclusion, drinking alcohol does not have to mean consuming excessive calories. By choosing low-calorie spirits, light beer, low-alcohol wines, and mixing your own low-calorie cocktails, you can enjoy alcohol without sabotaging your diet.
Remember to drink responsibly, stay hydrated, and eat a healthy meal before drinking. With these tips, you can enjoy a night out without guilt. Cheers!
